The polite thing to do...

People, please tell me...

if you have the mints or gum, and, after a meal with friends, you go for a piece, should you, offer some to those at the table???

Is it an accepted polite thing??? or would you be considered a little rude if you didn't? yeah, its one thing if you don't know the people well, or if you have, like, two pieces left...but in general...

what say you?

i dunno if it's rude or not to not offer, but i always offer. i figure, if my breath feels like it needsta be refreshed, then everyone else feels that way too. plus, why put up with their stinkiness.

but hey, if someone goes for a piece and doesn't offer, i just ask... i figure, why make them put up with my stinkiness when they're refreshing. is that rude of me?

All I'm thinking is, who didn't offer you a mint? :)

You know, I look at it this way. I'm more apt to offer mints (assuming I have them on me as 99% of the time I leave them in the car) than gum. For one thing, I don't chew much gum, and for another there's what, like maybe 6 sticks in your pack (assuming it's brand new). I hate not being able to give everyone a piece, so I refrain from offering (usually).

I think it might should work like this. Have your piece of gum or whatever, but only hand it out on request. Sometimes people might feel they have to accept it if it's offered, so if they want a piece, they'll ask, right? That way you can be maintain politeness without going crazy about etiquette.
